About the Project
The A4440 Southern Link Road around Worcester is a vital corridor providing links to the M5, Worcester and south of the county. It is used by over 30,000 vehicles a day. APC Civils were awarded the contract to supply and install temporary concrete barriers on the A4440’s complex upgrade by main contractor Alun Griffiths.
The main priority for the contractor was to keep all routes open and provide safe segregation and protection of construction workers from traffic, pedestrians and cyclists whilst the improvement works were carried out.
The Solution
Initially, Chapter 8 plastic barriers were used for workforce segregation, however they could not match the high containment levels provided by concrete barriers. APC Civils were deployed to install 1600 linear metres of barrier. As the scheme progressed, there was a requirement to relocate barriers around the site to keep sections of road open. APC worked with the site team to plan and co-ordinate the barrier relocation works, all of which, were carried out during night shifts to minimise the inconvenience to the road user.
The benefits
- The high containment level of the barriers protected and safely segregated road workers from heavy traffic during the A4440 road upgrade.
- Installations and removal of barrier were quick and efficient due to the barrier being free standing, requiring no pre drilling or anchoring to the road surface and no reinstatement is needed to the road surface after removal.
- Relocation of barrier was fast and simple using the quick coupling hooks connecting the barriers together achieving relocations of over 1200 linear metres in one shift.
